Used it and passed the test on the first try. I recommond you also buy the big book. Just keep doing the problems over and over again. You will need at least 3-4 weeks to prepare for this exam. This book will help.

This is less a 'study guide' and more of a 'book of practice problems'. Both useful things, but they serve different purposes. This book does talk about some strategies for taking the FE in the very beginning, but more along the lines of why questions are asked certain way, and less about test taking strategies. Instead, the bulk of it is practice problems from past FE exams, both for diagnostic test sections and for learning how to solve the problem with step-by-step solutions. The step-by-step parts are usually pretty clear, but they do rely on the reader knowing/remembering some mid-level theorems - these could be improved by reducing the solutions down further. But this is still the best FE prep book on the market right now. Now, I did pass the FE and I used this book to study, but I used strategies that I found elsewhere. I'll lay them out here:1. There is no 'passing' score for the FE. Instead, they take all the scores from the same test on that day, scale them using the unmarked 'bench marking' problems, and place the scores on the standard distribution. The bottom 25% do not pass, the top 75% do. the scaling doesn't drastically change the scores, so the FE is designed to essentially pass those who are able do better than straight guessing on a 4-part multiple choice test. This means ANSWER EVERY PROBLEM, even if it is a completely wild guess. Then use your own skills as an engineer to narrow it down to 2 choices that make sense, or actually solve it if you can in the 3-minute pacing that the FE requires.2. If you see units, it is a unit conversion problem. Plain and simple. You don't need to remember your physics, dynamics, statics, fluids, or thermo course material and do those problems in a fraction of the pacing you got for your undergrad tests. You just need to convert the units correctly 9/10.3. Learn to search the FE Handbook PDF by problem keyword. This is where these practice problems come particularly in handy. Don't practice the problems to memorize how to solve them. Practice spotting the keyword you need to search in the Handbook PDF they provide on the test. That way you can simply look up the information you need right off the bat and see how to do the problem. You'll still need a basic competency in solving that particular type of engineering problem - the FE handbook doesn't walk you through the formulas application step-by-step - but you don't need to memorize the formulas. That is it for strategy, really.

The NCEES has changed the FE to a computer based exam with less questions. You will have the option of taking a discipline specific exam, or the non-disciple specific exam. Before you start studying, be sure to view the NCEES handbook and see which topics will be covered in your exam. This is great, because as opposed to the old version of the exam, you will only have to review a few sections of this book. For example, Environmental Engineers DON'T need to review the sections on Electricity, Computers, Dynamics, Statics, Chemistry, Biology, Etc, but instead should concentrate on Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Ethics, Engineering Econ, Materials, and Prob & Stat.Given the new format, you will find that a lot of the information about study plans and such is outdated. It is best to make a list of the sections you need to review, and plan your own schedule. I would also suggest renting the discipline specific prep book for your exam, if available.I find that this book tends to over complicate some of the questions, and focuses too much on things I didn't really see on the exam. For example, you could spend a week reviewing the entire math section of this book, and end up only seeing two or three easy math problems on the exam. If you focus on the right things, then this book is great, but don't get caught up in it's size.P.S. To all the Environmental Engineers out there, review the Thermodynamics section! Do it like 3 times. You will thank me later.

I used this manual as directed for the 3 month preparation, and passed on my first try. And it was exhausting. I spent a LOT of time doing this, every single day. Rather than taking breaks, I would do the diagnostic test one day, then spend one day per section, then one day on the chapter test.I studied MUCH more than everyone I knew that had taken the test, and the two friends I tested with both passed as well. I found that the material in this book was more involved and difficult than the actual test. However, I am glad that I over-studied, as I think it's definitely better to be over prepared (I do know a couple of individuals that did NOT pass! The test is by no means easy). I highly recommend using this as a study guide, but don't drown yourself in this book like I did.I also recommend a study aide that specifically helps you to use the manual. I borrowed one from a professor, and it showed me the easiest and most efficient search terms to find what I was looking for, which saved me time and flat out answered several questions on the exam.

I studied through most of this book in preparation for the mechanical FE exam. The review coverage was completely sufficient in most of the topics. Here's a breakdown of how well the book covered the topics on the exam.Fluid mechanics - Good coverageStrengths - Good coverageControl Systems - No coverageMachine Design - No coverageDynamics - Good coverageHeat Transfer - Some review, but not sufficientThermodynamics - Moderately sufficientEconomics - Good coverageMath - More review than neccesaryIn conclusion, this book is a really good place to start in preparation for the mechanical FE exam; however, I recommend further studying of thermodynamics, heat transfer, machine design and basic control system topics (very basic) than is offered by this book. It's also important to become EXTREMELY familiar with the FE reference manual, especially in the thermodynamics section. Good luck!
